Getting Around
There are many places you will want to visit on the island and the surrounding waters. Most visitors without their own boat arrive on Elbow Cay via ferry and then pick up golf carts, boats, and bicycles, which are all readily available for rent. It is critical that they be reserved far in advance of your arrival as quantities are limited.
Boats
The waters and surrounding cays are a boater's paradise. Most areas of interest are protected and safe even for those of limited boating experience. Several companies rent a variety of boats and are accustomed to educating newcomers in the safe enjoyment of the area. Ask the boat rental agents for recommendations based on the number in your party and your boating experience.
The owners of Dunwanderin prefer the 20' or 23' Albury boats, which were designed and built on the neighboring island of Man-O-War They are roomy, sturdy, ride well, and perfect for enjoying the surrounding waters. The Alburys rented by Island Marine, Barfoot Boat Rentals, and Cats Paw are exceptionally well maintained, probably the best of all the rental boats, and the rental companies are located on or near Elbow Cay for easy pickup/return. Having a good boat, like having a good house, will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the area.

Golf Carts
Located in the heart of the settlement, Dunwanderin has easy walking access to the beach, the harbour, docks, shops, groceries, and restaurants. A golf cart is not essential, but convenient for traveling to places south of the settlement. (Rental carts must remain outside of the settlement proper, and are parked outside of the town gate - a 5-minute walk from the house. This minor inconvenience helps protect the tranquility of town and its pedestrian-friendly paths.)

Bicycles
Bicycles are great for those that prefer a more aerobic way of getting around. For older children, bicycles can be a ticket to freedom as long as they are cautious… driving on the left side of the road goes against most people's experience.

Ferries
The ferry to Hope Town leaves from "the crossing" which is a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport. Taxi drivers know where to go.
THE SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITH THE TIME OF THE YEAR AND/OR WEATHER. PLEASE VISIT THE FERRY COMPANY WEBSITE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION.

Cars
There are no cars available for rent on Elbow Cay, nor is there any reason to need one as most people use boats, golf carts, and bicycles.
For those choosing to explore the large adjacent Greater Abaco Island, cars are available for rent in Marsh Harbour. Before renting a car, consider the benefits of local knowledge by hiring a taxi.
A Word of Caution
Golf carts don't have seatbelts or any other safety devices to protect passengers. Young children (and adults) can fall out with surprising ease. Road traffic in some areas can be dangerous to pedestrians or cyclists. Boats are likewise potentially dangerous. A serious injury can easily be life-threatening due to the difficulty in receiving urgent medical attention on an island in a foreign country. Use good judgment. Dangerous or careless operation may result in the rental company taking the boat, bike, or cart.
